5 Bedroom House in Wandsworth Common, London
Californian cool, Scandi sleek, modernist manipulation — whatever you want to call it, this design-led home uses striking architecture and a luxury, light-filled aesthetic to create an impressively unique five-bedroom home that manages to be both family-friendly and unfalteringly fabulous. Enviably located on the fringes of leafy Wandsworth Common, with its quaint cafes, gastro pubs, and upmarket restaurants, you can enjoy the charming village vibes of this tranquil pocket of London, whilst being perfectly poised to explore the city from Wandsworth Common Station.
From the moment you step through the gates, you'll be struck by this home's masterly style and scale. The sweeping driveway skirts one of Wandsworth's locally-famed bowls lawns (don't worry, it's not frequently used and is the most notably quiet, genteel sport ever!), and you'll reach a rectilinear, modernist-style building. Enhanced by swathes of glass and wood cladding, it chimes so well with the backdrop of trees and sky that it makes us think of an ultra-hip Californian treehouse. Inside, lofty ceilings, stacked floors, and open staircases optimise space and light. A sense of being outside inside pervades, with a glass-walled living room opening onto an expansive garden and most bedrooms featuring sliding doors onto private terraces. But with a few inviting nooks interspersed (our favourites being the plush TV room and the cushy sunroom overlooking the garden), you can still cosy up with the fam to feel right at home. Clean lines and state-of-the-art amenities furnish a show-stopping kitchen, whilst a generously-sized dining table affords the perfect setting for a home-cooked meal. Although nowhere can compete with the alfresco option — or that top-of-the-range Big Green Egg BBQ. The five bedrooms unite soft tones and a pared-back aesthetic, with added luxuries (like five sleek ensuites and a peppering of design flourishes) proving that every detail has been crafted with care.
We love
The garden is a triumph of split levels, decked seating areas, and effort-free Astroturf. Screened by trees it offers a welcome sense of privacy and serenity, whilst a children's play area and plenty of comfy spots for evening drinks mean there's something for everyone. Otherwise it's got to be the mod cons, be it the flashy light controls, the cooling air-con at the front, or the Sonos speakers throughout. Trust us, you're in good hands here.
Home truths:
No smoking, pets, or parties! The driveway is secured with an automatic gate. There are two off-road parking spaces available — one you're free to use and the other is on request only. There's a spare mattress that can be set up (we'd recommend in the third bedroom) to sleep an extra guest. The small double bed in the third bedroom can sleep one adult or two children. A dog usually lives but she's hypoallergenic, so shouldn't be an issue. That greatest of all amenities — air-con — is available at the front of the house where you'll get most sun. The TV in the kitchen (pictured) is being removed. One room (not pictured) on the top floor will be locked and is not available to guests.
