Masham has a lovely medieval church and a Georgian town square, reputedly one of the largest in the county with a couple of cafes, pubs and shops. Aficionados of fine ale will be all too aware that this is the home of the Black Sheep Brewery, where you can take a tour before treating yourself to a glass or two in the bar. Masham is a superb base from which to explore the very best of The Dales with York, Leeds and Harrogate all easily reached within an hour. Once a great Cistercian monastery, Jervaulx Abbey sits five miles to the north of the town and has won the hearts of visitors over the years; though ruined and roofless, it's an atmospheric spot well worth a visit. The beautiful remains of popular Fountains Abbey and its stunning water gardens can be found ten miles to the south of Masham. With over 800 acres of attractive grounds and ancient woodland, it's very easy to find that perfect picnic spot.
